Salvadori 2020 Remote Student
Design Charrette
This year, we had to relearn how to meet the needs of our students and schools. In the wake of the
COVID-19 pandemic, along with additional social issues within the New York community, we wanted to provide our students with the safe space of expression. We did this by altering our Landmarks, Monuments, and Memorials Curriculum. For the 2020 Remote Design Charrette participants were to create a landmark, monument, or memorial of their choice that was symbolic of a social justice issue they aspired to express of. They were then to give a presentation to share the symbolism of their design and building specs.

Submission Example 1:
“The name of my art installation is The World. I would like my art installation to be near 50 Bushwick Place, because I would like my family to be able to admire and see my creation in person without traveling far. The theme of my art installation is COVID-19 and technology, because it’s quite relevant currently, and it’s something people in future times would be able to see. Those in the future who do see my project would be able to be informed on COVID-19, a pandemic that has affected the entire world and its people in 2020 (and likely further). The message I want to convey is how the world has been entirely changed by COVID-19, But at the same time people in the world have also benefited from it. The emotions I want my audience to feel is curiosity about COVID-19 and its effect on the world, for curiosity leads to discovery, discovery leads to study, and study leads to knowledge.” - Salvadori Student, Madiba Prep
